How to Design Camera Placement That Covers What Matters

A camera pointed at the wrong spot can create a false sense of security. It may record hours of driveway footage while missing the person who approached a side gate, entered through a rear door, or took a package from the front porch. Knowing how to design camera placement starts with identifying the events you need to capture, then choosing positions that produce clear, usable evidence.

For Los Angeles homes, apartment properties, offices, retail locations, and warehouses, the goal is not to put a camera on every wall. The goal is dependable coverage of entrances, activity zones, vehicles, valuables, and the paths people use to reach them.

Start Camera Placement With the Property's Risk Points

Walk the property as if you were approaching it for the first time. Look beyond the obvious front door. Consider gates, side yards, detached garages, delivery areas, loading doors, stairwells, rear exits, elevator lobbies, cash-handling areas, and any blind side of the building.

At a home, exterior doors and driveway access usually come first. A front-facing camera can document deliveries and visitors, while cameras covering the driveway, backyard entry, and side gate close common gaps. For a larger property, shared mail areas, parking entrances, trash enclosures, and pool or amenity access may deserve coverage as well.

At a business, camera placement should follow both security and operations. Cover customer entrances, employee doors, point-of-sale areas, stock rooms, receiving doors, and parking access. A warehouse may need a broad view of aisles and dock doors, but a narrow, dedicated view at each entry is often more valuable for identifying a face.

Ask a direct question at every location: if an incident happened here, what would you need to see afterward? The answer may be a face, a license plate, the direction someone traveled, an employee action, or confirmation that a door was secured.

Design for Identification, Not Just Visibility

A wide camera view can show that someone was present. It may not show who that person was. This is one of the most common placement mistakes.

Use wide-angle cameras to monitor broad areas such as yards, parking lots, hallways, or open sales floors. Then use more focused views where identification matters. A camera at an exterior doorway should be positioned to capture a visitor's face as they approach, not only the top of their head as they stand under an eave.

Height makes a major difference. Mounting a camera too high protects it from tampering, but it also creates steep angles and poor facial detail. In many exterior applications, a mounting height around 8 to 10 feet is a practical starting point. The exact height depends on the lens, mounting surface, and whether the camera needs to watch a narrow approach or a broad area.

Avoid aiming cameras across excessive distances when detail is required. A 4K camera provides more pixels than older systems, but it cannot recover facial detail that was never captured because the subject occupied only a small part of the image. If you need to identify people at a gate 60 feet away, plan a camera specifically for that gate rather than relying on one broad overview camera mounted on the building.

Cover Approaches and Paths of Travel

The strongest camera designs create overlap between views. One camera may show a person entering a driveway, while another captures their face near the door. A third may cover the vehicle's exit path. This approach helps establish a clear sequence of events instead of leaving one incomplete clip.

For license plates, placement is even more specific. A general parking-lot camera is rarely the right choice for reliable plate capture. The camera needs a controlled view of the vehicle approach, appropriate lens selection, proper angle, and settings that account for headlights, speed, and nighttime conditions.

Account for Light Before Choosing the Mounting Point

Lighting can make a professionally installed camera system look excellent or nearly useless. Before finalizing placement, check the view in morning sun, late afternoon glare, nighttime darkness, and with exterior lights switched on.

Do not point a camera directly toward the rising or setting sun if another position is available. Strong backlight at a doorway can turn a visitor into a silhouette. Cameras with wide dynamic range can help, but proper placement remains the first line of defense.

Night coverage needs equal attention. Infrared illumination works well within its intended range, but reflective surfaces can cause problems. White walls, low eaves, nearby signs, and glass can reflect infrared light back toward the lens and wash out the image. A small adjustment in angle or mounting position can solve an issue that software settings will not.

For parking areas and commercial exteriors, existing lighting may need improvement. Cameras perform better when the area has consistent, even light rather than a bright fixture surrounded by deep shadows. Motion-activated lighting can also support deterrence, but it should not be positioned where it repeatedly flares into the camera lens.

Avoid Obstructions and Maintenance Problems

A camera view that looks clear during installation may become blocked by landscaping, parked trucks, seasonal decorations, awnings, or a rolling gate. Look for likely obstructions before mounting hardware goes into the wall.

Trees and shrubs deserve special attention. A branch moving in front of a camera can create repeated motion alerts, drain storage capacity, and obscure a critical view during wind or rain. Plan for vegetation growth and arrange periodic trimming where necessary.

Choose mounting locations that can be safely serviced. Cameras occasionally need cleaning, angle adjustments, firmware updates, or replacement after storm damage. A clean installation should protect cabling in conduit or within the structure, use weather-rated components outdoors, and avoid exposed wire runs that invite damage or tampering.

For commercial properties, labeled cabling and organized equipment matter long after installation day. When a camera needs service, a technician should be able to identify the cable, power source, network connection, and recorder channel without tracing unmarked wiring through a ceiling or electrical room.

Balance Coverage With Privacy and Compliance

Security cameras should protect your property without unnecessarily recording private spaces. Aim exterior cameras at your own entries, walkways, fences, and parking areas. Avoid pointing cameras into neighbors' windows, private yards, restrooms, changing areas, or other locations where people reasonably expect privacy.

Audio recording requires additional care. California has strict rules around recording confidential communications, and the appropriate use of audio can depend on the setting and circumstances. For many properties, video coverage and visual alerts provide the security value needed without recording conversations.

Businesses should also establish practical policies for employee and customer surveillance. Cameras may be necessary in entrances, cash areas, inventory rooms, or work zones, but the purpose should be clear and the placement defensible. For multi-family communities and managed properties, communicate where cameras are installed and keep coverage focused on common areas and security concerns.

Plan the System Around Real Use After an Event

Camera placement is only half the job. The system must be easy to use when someone needs footage quickly. Before installation, decide who needs remote access, which events should trigger alerts, how long recordings should be retained, and whether the internet connection can support remote viewing.

Too many motion alerts can cause users to ignore the app. A camera aimed at a busy street, waving palm trees, or a public sidewalk may generate constant notifications. Adjust the field of view, define motion zones, and use person or vehicle detection where appropriate. The right alert is one that prompts action, not one that gets dismissed all day.

Storage should match the property's risk level and operating needs. A homeowner may need several weeks of recording for a few cameras. A business with multiple 4K cameras, continuous recording, and incident-reporting requirements may need substantially more storage. Recording resolution, frame rate, activity level, and retention targets all affect the final design.

When a Professional Site Assessment Makes Sense

Simple camera additions can be straightforward, but larger systems benefit from an on-site assessment. A professional can test sightlines, measure cable paths, identify network and power requirements, evaluate low-light conditions, and recommend camera types without overselling equipment that does not solve a real problem.

That matters especially for properties with older wiring, detached structures, multiple buildings, access control, alarm integration, or demanding exterior conditions. A properly planned system can combine surveillance, remote access, recording, and clean low-voltage infrastructure in a way that remains serviceable as the property changes.
