Chief’s Regulation 4 (Reg 4)

The fire department requires buildings to regularly test and certify their fire protection systems. It applies to high-hazard and essential-service buildings, such as hospitals, schools, and high-rises. Certified contractors must inspect and test fire alarms, sprinklers, standpipes, and other fire safety systems to ensure they function properly in the event of a fire.

Testing Requirement

Fire alarms are typically tested every year, and sprinkler systems every five years. Any issues found must be repaired promptly.

The Fire Department may conduct inspections to verify compliance. Buildings that fail to meet Regulation 4 requirements may face fines, penalties, or closure until violations are corrected.
